The Build Night Break Down: September & October!

by Lukas Mack

Welcome all to this very special double issue of the Build Night Break Down. We have a heap of builds and prizes and all sorts of news to cover, so let’s neither dilly nor dally. Let’s just dive in.

Real quick, for those new about these parts, Buildapalooza is PerthLUG’s regular social event where on the second Monday of every month we bring along a Lego set and just build and socialise. We’re a friendly bunch from all walks of life. It’s just $5 for non-members to help keep the lights on. Where & when at the bottom of this page.

First up, a big thanks to all those who showed up to this Monday’s build night. It can be tough backing up after a big show like Bricktober all weekend, so a special thanks to all those who exhibited works at Curtin and made that extra effort. We appreciate you. I was unable to personally attend last month’s Buildapalooza, but thanks to reporters Sue and Helen, we’ll bring you up to date with all the prizes from September right now.

September’s Members’ Draw looked to be another solid lot of prizes from what I can see: some nice new releases and the awesome Horse Knight Castle. Just gives us a whole Castle theme already, Lego! Congrats to Claudia for taking that one home. A very well-deserved win. Thanks for all you do Claudia, and enjoy.

Members’ Draw: September

Creator Medieval Horse Knight Castle 31168: Claudia R
Technic Ferrari FXX K 42212: Adam G
One Piece Windmill Village Hut 75636: Kelly H

For our extra bonus raffle last month, Jack D took home the absurdly glorious Fortnite Mecha Team Leader 77078. I’m sure Jack will appreciate that 2500-piece titan of a set. Certainly worth the price of a raffle ticket I’d say. Congrats to all our September winners. Now bring on the October haul!

Monday’s Members’ Draw was comprised of all sorts of spooky sets. With Halloween creeping up on us quick, how perfectly appropriate. And what a variety we had here from the 3in1 Haunted Mansion to the wreath and the terrifying treatise from Harry Potter. Super selection. Congrats to Maxine who snagged the surprisingly charming little pickup truck. That set just oozes character, doesn’t it? And well done to all our winners below:

Members’ Draw: October

Harry Potter The Monster Book of Monsters 30628: Cindy A
Creator Haunted Mansion 31167: Dirk S
Jack-O’-Lantern Pickup Truck 40822: Maxine T
Halloween Wreath 40825: Zulma S

Our bonus raffles are always special, but take a look at October’s prize: that there’s the Simpsons Krusty Burger 10352. Maybe I should’ve picked up a second ticket when I was offered. Doh! For lucky winners Lara & Anton, y’all are going to have a blast with that one, I bet. Congratulations. As for the rest of us, there’s always next time. These bonus raffles never disappoint, so come along in November and grab yourself a ticket for your chance to win something epic too.

Let’s move away from all these prizes to the other activities of October’s Buildapalooza. The Parts Draft table was abuzz again with sorting, sorting, some more sorting, and later selecting, of course. This month’s offering to the parts draw deities was the highly detailed Horizon Aloy & Varl vs. Shell-Walker & Sawtooth 77037. I’ve just started building this for my own collection and can tell you it’s a great set to part out with all those little plates and tiles and fiddly bits. Solid pick team. If you’d like to join in with the Parts Draft next month, bring along two copies of the 76442 Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle Charms Class. I’ve been informed it’s a small set often on sale. Looks a goer.

We do actually build Lego at these build nights…sometimes. Dale brought along his vintage Galidor set. What a rare find! It was such a privilege to see a sample of this infamous line in person: so, so different. I can’t say it’s a complex build with a high piece count but we all have to start somewhere mate! Luke’s fossil Triceratops build looked a lot more intricate in comparison, though admittedly it did lack the out-there designs of Galidor! Having said that, the Triceratops surprised me with a ball joint hidden behind the head. Is there a Lego Triceratops skeleton body set out there I’m also unaware of?? In any case, I guess you’re just going to have to build the rest of the body yourself now, Luke. Oh well, has to be done!

Next up, Peter was assembling the exquisite Shakleton’s Lifeboat GWP as a prelude to building the big Endeavour set. This looked to be a solid and sophisticated model with nice minifigs and accessories to flesh it out and add some character. I could see this one adorning the shelf in my library by the leatherbound books… if I were to own a library or any leatherbound books, as it were.

Scanning around the hall, there were plenty of Halloween sets about, as one might expect for this time of year. Michael’s Halloween Pumpkin drew my eye though with its light-up brick and glowy mug. The pumpkin was certainly cute and all, but Amy’s Duplo ghosts lit my face up even more. Those are so darn cute I lack the words. I’ll take twenty, please and thank you.

Continuing on the Halloween theme, Joanne was ahead of the game with this pic snapped back at September’s Buildapalooza. I must’ve seen three or four of the same Halloween Wreath this month, plus we gave another one away in the Members’ Draw. So, Lego must be onto something special with this set. I did notice a ton of minifig accessories and clever parts mixed in there for detail. Keep an eye out maybe if you haven’t already picked one up.

As we move on from the builds showcase now, let’s take a moment to celebrate all those who built their own wonderful creations and exhibited them at this year’s Bricktober exhibition over the weekend. You all worked so hard for months and months, but look what a superb show you delivered. PerthLUG was not only represented by our many individual members who participated, but also with this amazing group collaboration you can see above. It was so much fun spotting all the easter eggs and details in the Apartments. I can’t imagine a Star Wars Rancor would adjust well to that cramped space but I suppose it’s not all too different from a dungeon. Just elevated a little is all: basically the same! A special thanks to Mike for manning the table all weekend. What an effort buddy, cheers. And finally, a big thanks to the whole team for all your work and for representing your LUG with pride.

Now time for a little news before I let you go. We are again accepting donations for our annual Brickmas appeal, supporting children in hospitals who are doing it tough over Christmas. PerthLUG has partnered with CanTeen for the past couple of years, and we’re proud to be teaming up with them once more for 2025. Help put smiles on the faces of those who really, really deserve it this Christmas by bringing along a new small Lego set to the November or December Buildapalooza, or even the next Minifigapalooza.

Speaking of our next Lego Buy/Sell day, save the date for Sunday, December 7th, 2-5pm at South Perth Community Centre: Cnr Sandgate and South Terrace in South Perth. Minifigapalooza is massive, with Lego bargains galore. You won’t want to miss this one. Maybe you’ll even score that grail set or super-rare minifigure.

And finally, in conjunction with our usual Buildapalooza next month, we’ll hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend, of course, with votes limited only to paid members. Three positions on the Committee will be up for vote: President, Treasurer and General Member. Emails with full details have been sent to all members, but if you are having trouble accessing this email, wish to nominate or have any other questions, please contact us here at perthlug@perthlug.com.

Well now, this was an epic double issue for the ages, but that about wraps us up for another Build Night Break Down. We’ll be back again next month on the 10th of November from 7 to 11pm at our usual spot — John McGrath Pavilion, off Hensman Street, South Perth. See you all in November.
