The Build Night Break Down: August!

by Lukas Mack

Monday’s Buildapalooza was another super fun night with Lego builds, prizes, a parts draft and a heap of laughs all round. Read on as we recap all the highlights in this latest edition of the Build Night Break Down.

Some real quick info for those who might be new. Buildapalooza is PerthLUG’s regular social event where on the second Monday of every month we bring along a Lego set and just build and socialise. We’re a friendly bunch from all walks of life. It’s just $5 for non-members to help keep the lights on. Where & when at the bottom of the page.

Let’s dive into the action with the night’s Members’ Draw. How amazing is this selection of prizes huh? Incredible. FIVE very lucky members took home a new Lego set. Not a bad deal at all. Congratulations to all our winners below:

Members’ Draw

Arcade Machine 40805: Dexter S (on behalf of Adrienne S)
Friendly Snails 40788 (Kindly donated by Judy): Helena M (on behalf of Tilda M)
The Evolution of STEM 21355: Eric W
Wednesday Black Dahlia Flower 76784: Jodie S
Fortnite BrickHeadz Adventure Peely & Cuddle Team Leader 40760: Leander M

Dexter & Helena with their primo Members’ prizes.

We’re not quite done with prizes just yet. This month’s extra special bonus raffle was a pearler! Who picked this set out? Brilliant choice. For just $2, those at the event had the opportunity to win the new Minifigure Vending Machine 21358. Exclusive minifigs in a functioning capsule machine built out of Lego; wow. It’s subtle but can you tell this author reallllly wanted it? Well, my number wasn’t so lucky this time, but for Sally C it was a different story entirely. A massive congrats to Sally on the win and I’m sure you’ll have a blast building this one. Well done Sally and well done to all our winners.

Sally with winning ticket still in hand!

Moving away from prizes and onto the Parts Draft now. This month’s sacrificial set was the adorable Baby Dinosaur Dolores: Aquilops 76970. I feel bad for the little fella but those bits were too good not to part out, evidently. Probably shouldn’t have named the dino first though. Ok ok, enough foolishness from me. What’s all this Parts Draft thing about? It’s a great resource for all MOC builders to take home decently useful quantities of Lego parts. Each participant contributes a set and the group divvies up the pieces. If you’d like to join in, just follow us along at our PerthLUG Facebook page and you’ll get the heads up on which set to bring along next month.

All Parts Draft crew at sorting stations!

Now for my favourite part of the evening. I go about the room sticking my nose into all the wonderful Lego sets being built. It’s a real privilege to see so many sets in person and my thanks to everyone for obliging me so I can share a portion with y’all here.

First cab off the ranks is Kayleigh here showing off her gorgeous Unicorn Castle 31175. The colours of this one are so fun and vibrant and the ponies are dual-molded and the composition is super balanced and maybe I need to buy one… Thanks Kayleigh for putting this one on my radar.

Next up, we have a mumma-panda and bubba-panda, complete with the obligatory bamboo of course. Thanks to Helena for this dose of super-cute. Yet another Creator 3in1 set going low-key hard in the design department. The joint articulation is superb and adds so much to the character and customisability of these lil’ guys.

A quick-fire round now with Rigby’s vibrant green Speed Champion first. Rigby highlighted a little colour variation in the green bricks. Something to watch out for if you had this on your ‘maybe’ list. Next, we have Elliott and two builds from the little man. Yet another 3in1 with the Tropical Toucan (31173) and the very underrated African Savanna Diorama 40784 GWP. Now I’ve seen this set in person, I think it’s the box art that really undersells the set. All the details are lost in the solid bright orange. And now to Italy with Hannah’s Postcard 40818. Well done Hannah for completing a build at build night! One of these months I’ll match your achievement I swear!

For our penultimate entry to today’s catalog, we have two special sets built by Brooke. The retro-futurist Flying Moon Car was an Insiders Reward and reminded me of one of those ‘executive novelty desk toys’ you would’ve seen in a 90’s airplane magazine advert. Is this a hyper-niche obscure reference? Yes. But I mean it in the best way. The car comes off and back on its stand with ease, just inviting it to be played with despite its display appeal. And the Friendly Snails GWP; an absolute delight of a set. I saw a few of these on Monday night and Judy was even so generous as to donate hers to the Members’ Draw.

Finally, the build that caught my attention the most was this absurdly awesome Gromit alt-build of the Creator 3in1 Cute Bunny. How perfect is that face?! Nailed it. Cheers to Brad for showing us this one. You can find the instructions on Rebrickable’s website should you wish to make one for yourself. Here’s the link.

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful pics of your builds, and a massive thanks to all of those who attended the August Buildapalooza. We’ll be back again next month on the 8th from 7 to 11 PM at our usual spot — John McGrath Pavilion, off Hensman Street, South Perth. So if you’re a PerthLUG longtimer or a Lego newcomer, you’re all absolutely welcome. See you in September!
