The Build Night Break Down: June!

by Lukas Mack

The buildapalooza was back again Monday night and so am I for your recap of all the highlights. It may well be cooling down here but nothing stops the good people of Perth from filling the hall at their Lego build night. It was another bumper turnout with prizes, building and a whole lot of laughs. Let’s break it all down.

Some real quick info for those who might be new. Buildapalooza is PerthLUG’s regular social event where on the second Monday of every month we bring along a Lego set and just build and socialise. We’re a friendly bunch from all walks of life. It’s just $5 for non-members to help keep the lights on. Where & when at the bottom of the page.

As is tradition here, let’s dive straight into the amazing prizes. I know what you’re here for! Let’s start with the Members’ Draw where we had FOUR great sets to give away to the fine folk who support us. This month’s offering varied from a speedy Technic F1 car to the mighty Medieval Dragon. Something for almost everyone I reckon. Tim M took home the very elegant Japanese Maple Tree set, whether his little’un lets him keep it might be another story though I think! Congrats all the same mate. Well deserved.

Of course, not only do members receive free door entry, a custom brick badge and prioritised access to some sales events, they also have their names thrown into the draw whether they can make it to the night or not. This was another month where that perk paid off handsomely for some our very lucky members! Congratulations to our other winners below:

Members’ Draw

Medieval Dragon 31161: Mark H
Wild Animals: Panda Family 31165: Jacqui R
Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance 42165: Liam S

We’re not quite done with prizes just yet. This month’s extra special bonus raffle saw us offer up TWO new sets: Both Angel 43257 & the Pixar Luxo Jr. 21357. What an awesome win Judy S. I look forward to seeing pics of that Luxo Jr. built or better yet, bring it along next month for some detail shots please and thank you Judy!

Enough of the giveaways already, it’s time for the Parts Draft. On the sorting table this month; the Pretty Pink Flower Bouquet. These Botanicals sets continue to be popular amongst all kinds of builders. They certainly deliver a variety of interesting parts in heaps of fun colours. Solid pick team. Do you want to get involved with the parts draft next month? It’s a great resource for all MOC builders to take home useful quantities of Lego parts. Just follow us along at our PerthLUG Facebook page and you’ll get the heads up on which set to bring along in July.

Now it’s time for my favourite part of the night’s review – the Lego build show-reel. I had to duck out early so I’m along for the ride here with you folks. A huge thanks to Hannah for being our photographer on the ground.

Let’s define the words ‘cute’ and ‘adorable’ in the Lego context with just these three images, hey? Brooke takes us to outer space with a couple of baby astronaut GWPs while Sophie & Rigby show us just the happiest of Happy Plants. Finally, Theodore demonstrates that even a terrifying T-Rex can be a real charmer with the sweet Little Eatie set.

Still adorably cute, but also a little slimy maybe, snail mounts may be a viable option in the fantasy world inhabited by the residents of Mick’s Bricklink Mushroom House. But quick, quick, we have a heap to cover so let’s move beyond a snail’s pace huh? (ba-dum-tss). James built a whole Pack of Aliens while it looks like Kit was half way through a Mario level. Meanwhile, David’s skeleton scuba diver had seen better, brighter, more skin-attached-to-bones days. Think the octopus wins that Sunken Treasure hunt (set 31130).

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed catching up on all these builds and this is just a small sample of the night’s construction I’m certain. The final highlight has to go to Lee’s incredibly accurate depiction of the noble Bin Chicken. This pungently perfected scene captures the creatures in the throes of the hunt. A more dynamic and powerfully symbolic visage of the Australian experience is seldom seen in the medium. Thank you so very much for this exquisite MOC Lee. (Also, thank you all for indulging the cheeky art critic in me…)

That’s about all we have time for here but thanks to all those members who graciously shared their builds with us here and a special thanks again to Hannah for offering your photography skills.

Before we go, mark your calendars for PerthLUG’s first Minifigapalooza LEGO Buy/Sell Event of 2025. This event is not to be missed. Now at an even larger venue! Join us on Sunday, 29 June, from 2–5 PM at South Perth Community Hall (corner of South Terrace and Sandgate Street, South Perth).

That wraps up this issue of the Build Night Break Down, but we’ll be back next month for July’s Buildapalooza! Whether you’re looking to tackle your construction backlog or meet some fellow LEGO-lovers, come be part of the fun on July 14th from 7 to 11 PM at our usual spot — John McGrath Pavilion, off Hensman Street, South Perth. Everyone’s welcome!
