The Build Night Break Down: August!

by Lukas Mack

The Break Down is back again making sure you’re all caught up on the events of our monthly Buildapalooza. Whether you’re new to our monthly Build Nights or an old-timer, there’s plenty for you to sink your teeth into in this month’s epic issue of the Build Night Break Down.

We had an incredible turnout of over 75 people and the place was absolutely bustling. Seeing so many people come together to share in their enjoyment of Lego had a few of us reflecting on Buildapalooza’s humble beginnings. It was nearly eight years ago in the old South Perth Rotary Hall that a small group of PerthLUG members came together for the very first build night. The picture below shows what I believe to be one of the more busy nights back in the day. We’ve since moved into our current venue at the John McGrath Pavillion and this wonderful space has allowed us to welcome so many more faces.

Entry to Buildapalooza is still just $5 and gives you the chance to win one of our amazing door prizes. Usually we give away a couple Lego sets but this month we had something particularly special – giant 3D-printed animals from Upscale Prints! Up for grabs was a certainly well-fed chicken and the GOAT of all goats.

Congratulations to Maureen who nabbed the Goat, I’m totally not jealous one bit at all. Maureen couldn’t make it to the night but inclusion into the door prize is one of the perks of our annual membership program. Looks like your membership just paid for itself Maureen! And pictured on the right is Judy with her chicken posing amongst friends. Not too rough as a runner-up prize I’d say.

A staple of the build night experience is our Parts Draft – an opportunity to take home useful quantities of bricks parted out from multiples of the same set. Participants this month brought along the Friends Nova’s Room set with some wonderful colours and minifig accessories. If you’d like to get involved, you can find out all the details and which set to bring along to next month’s Buildapalooza at our Facebook Page.

Oh, we build actual Lego at these things too! I sent Hannah on an expedition to find builds out in the wild and what do we have here? Looks like Russell was working on a Forestmen’s Hideout, Tom made a great start on the massive Lion Knight’s Castle and Leander was diving deep into a Rebrickable take on the Friends Downtown Flower and Design Stores. Thanks again to Hannah for the report.

Kayleigh was very gracious to give us a sneak peek at her four (FOUR!) entries into our 16×16 Minifig Module Challenge. What wonderful details and colours in each – I found the use of negative space within the walls particularly clever. I can’t wait to see everyone else’s creations. The amount of talent in this group is amazing. Remember, entries close 31st of August. Just a couple weeks left.

If you’re new to Buildapalooza or missed this build night, don’t fret, we’ll be back next month on the second Monday as usual – that’s the 11th of September at our normal time and place; 7-11pm at John McGrath Pavilion off Hensman st, Como. Absolutely all are welcome and we can’t wait to see you there!

  1. Buildapalooza goes back further than that. It began a decade or so ago, when I, Richie, Dale, Paul Pinguet and a few others met up for a build-and-share at the Gary Holland Community Centre in Rockingham. We then moved to a hall in Fremantle for a couple of build meetings while PLUG was discussed, planned, and eventually realised.

It seemed like a good idea at the time 😉

    1. As we approach the 10 year anniversary, I’d love to start collecting some of those early memories. I feel like it deserves more than what I can manage to fit into a Break Down.
